Vision: Lost Editions Uncovered
Read Vision from the 1980s!
The very first issues of Vision, from the 1980s, have been digitised after copies were provided by one of the paper’s founding members.
Stacks of papers had been missing from Vision’s archive for years and were considered ‘lost’.
Described as a “revolution on campus,” Vision was first published in 1987 and was York’s first fully independent student newspaper.
The first 10 editions of Vision are now available to read online by following the links below, and they give a fascinating insight into the history of the University of York.
Digitising is a slow process, but we hope to continue uploading more issues over time. Watch this space! However, there still remain several issues missing from the archives.
The very first issue of York Student Vision is now available to read here:

We investigated doing this when I was Technical Director (I mentioned it in a blog post) but were told that it would probably be illegal (unless we had disclaimers releasing copyright to Nouse from all the contributors back then, then the copyright for each piece still belongs to the individual contributor and we would need permission to put them online), so didn’t continue with it :(

I’m pretty sure the copyright belongs to ‘Vision Newspapers Ltd.’. Vision (and Nouse) upload current editions because, as far as I can see, when you contribute your work you are giving permission for its reproduction – whether its in a week’s time or 20 years on. Besides which, I can’t imagine anyone having a problem – their names don’t show up in Google searches because they’re only scans.

I’d imagine that’s true (although I didn’t realise Vision was a ‘ltd’ company) and there’d be no issue really, but the Library (who hold all the Nouse archives, and who I asked for advice on digitising things) said that although the contributors at the time would have agreed for reproduction in print form, that you can’t automatically assume they would also have agreed for it to be in electronic form… And with the lack of a formal agreement, it becomes a grey area.

Wow, this stuff is really fascinating.
Some things seem to have changed a lot about the Uni, but other things are exactly the same, the front page story of the first edition for example could be on a campus newspaper front page today.
Very well done.

Best article so far, issue 4, page 3: “Phantom condom flinger quits”
On a serious note, some really interesting stuff here.

Some great articles in there and much easier to read than the old Nouse archives in the library. We really should have a world-class snooker match in Central Hall again. Loving the cryptic crosswords too!
